After earning a Bachelor's degree in African Languages and Literatures (University of Burundi), a Master's in Linguistics (Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar) and a PhD in Linguistics (Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar), Epimaque Nshimirimana is currently an Associate Professor in Language Sciences at the University of Burundi. He works as a teacher-researcher attached to the Institute of Applied Pedagogy. His areas of interest are descriptive linguistics, contrastive linguistics, linguistic typology and the teaching of national languages in Africa.

📄 The aim of of this paper is to identify potential sites of interlingual errors based on phonological dissimilarities between Kirundi and Kiswahili. In this way, it aims to enable Kiswahili teachers to anticipate phonological errors made by learners under the influence of Kirundi. By a methodological approach based essentially on the comparison of phonological systems and the prediction of errors, two categories of results were obtained. On the one hand, some phonological differences do not necessarily lead to interlingual errors in Kiswahili. On the other hand, a number of phonological facts of Kirundi are likely to be the cause of the following errors: (i) the missrealization of some consonants, (ii) the insertion of some consonants between successive vowels, (iii) the velarization of consonants in CS- sequences, (iv) the sonorization of tha consonant /k/ in infinitive verbs, (v) the use of allophones of Kirundi, (vi) the transformation of closed syllables into open syllables by adding a vowel to the coda. All these interlingual errors are verifiable in local Kiswahili thanks to the already existing contrastive works.
