Biography
Dr. Pacifique NIYONIZIGIYE is a Lecturer-Researcher at the University of Burundi, where he currently serves as Head of the Cooperation Department. A former Head of the Department of Law, he also served as Coordinator of the Project Burundi WRAP (Women’s Rights Awareness and Protection), which was based at the Faculty of Political and Legal Sciences.
He holds a PhD in Law, with a dissertation completed at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) on The Role of the Burundi Constitutional Court in Protecting the Rule of Law. A member of the African Network of Constitutional Law, his research areas include, among others, constitutional justice, the rule of law, human rights, and gender. He is also a Lawyer, registered with the Bujumbura Bar Association.
Before devoting himself to teaching, research, and legal practice, Dr. NIYONIZIGIYE worked at the Burundi Revenue Authority (OBR), where he notably held the positions of Officer in charge of Exemptions and Officer in charge of Administrative Tax Appeals. He also served at the National Assembly as Legal and Administrative Advisor in the Office of the Speaker; at ASCOMA Burundi and at the Union Commerciale d’Assurance et de Réassurance (UCAR) as Claims Officer.
