Dr. Lambert NIYOYITUNGIYE is a Professor and Lecturer-Researcher at the University of Burundi, Department of Biology, holding a PhD in Applied Biological Sciences from Assam University, Silchar, India, with a specialization in Environmental Sciences and Aquatic Ecology.
With more than 6 years of professional experience in research, teaching, technical expertise, and consultancy, he has developed strong expertise in integrated water resources management, limnology, aquatic ecology, wetland management and restoration, water quality assessment, and aquatic biodiversity conservation. His work also addresses the complex interactions between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, human activities, and environmental and climate change. In addition, he has expertise in environmental impact assessment, climate-change resilience of communities and households, natural resource governance, and sustainable environmental management.
As a Senior Consultant and Environmental and Natural Resources Specialist, he has contributed to a wide range of studies, assessments, and technical assignments for national and international organizations and development partners, including SNV through the PADANE Project, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness Programme, ZOA, PRODEFI–IFAD, Enabel Belgium, and VLIR-UOS Belgium.
As an author and co-author of at least 21 scientific publications, Prof. NIYOYITUNGIYE actively contributes to the generation, analysis, and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the fields of environmental, biological, and aquatic sciences. His research and professional activities contribute to a better understanding of environmental challenges, ecosystem dynamics, climate-related vulnerabilities, and sustainable natural resource management in Burundi and the wider African Great Lakes region.
Through his combined experience in academia, research, consultancy, environmental management, and development programmes, he contributes to strengthening evidence-based approaches to environmental conservation, climate resilience, sustainable resource management, and rural development.
