General Organization

Created in 1964, the University of Burundi (UB) currently has more than 12,000 students spread across 8 Faculties and 7 Institutes. With its number of registered students but also in terms of staff numbers and teaching sectors, it remains the largest public institution of Higher Education in Burundi. It aims to provide excellent training based on quality teaching, and wants to be a reference university in the sub-region.

The University of Burundi has evolved in its organization under the supervision of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. According to the respective articles: 5,6,7 and 21 of Decree No. 100/279 of October 18, 2012 relating to the reorganization and operation of the University of Burundi:

– The University of Burundi is organized into Faculties and Institutes. The Faculties and Institutes are organized into departments and sections. The University of Burundi also includes the administrative and technical services, authorities, research centers and organizations necessary for the accomplishment of its mission. – Daily management is ensured by the Rector assisted by the Vice-Rector all appointed by Decree on the proposal of the Minister responsible for Higher Education in his responsibilities.

– The University of Burundi is administered by a Board of Directors of 9 members.

– A Secretary General is appointed by decree on the proposal of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; he is responsible for the administrative coordination of the University of Burundi.
